Have you experienced obsessions and /or compulsions?

My name is Orinayo Onabanjo and I am a trainee counselling psychologist at the University of Surrey. As part of my doctoral thesis, I am inviting adults currently experiencing or who have had an experience of obsessions and compulsions to take part in a research project that explores their subjective experiences of obsessions and compulsions.

The aim of the project is to understand your experience of obsessions and compulsions in a holistic way by taking into account your whole life context and interpersonal relationships. This project will not be coming from the common diagnostic perspective of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This means the focus will not be on the obsessions and compulsions as symptoms of an OCD diagnosis, but as meaningful responses to your unique life experiences.

The aim is to explore your perspective on what your experience of obsessions and compulsions is like in the context of your wider environment and interpersonal relationships.

The research study will involve semi-structured interviews which allow for open ended exploration of your experience. The interview will last between 1 to 1.5 hours and take place in either London or Bath

If you would like to participate in the study, please contact me on the following email:

Are you a mum with OCD?

Is your child under 18 months old?
We want to investigate unique factors that have been suggested by mothers to potentially influence the development of perinatal OCD. Through this research, we hope to raise greater awareness and understanding of perinatal OCD so that those at risk can be identified earlier and be supported more successfully.

My name is Beth and I am a Research Assistant for this unique online study looking at the potential predictors of perinatal OCD. This research is being supported by Nottingham Trent University.

You are eligible to participate in this research if:
• You are a mother
• You have a child under 18 months old
• You have perinatal OCD, extremely anxious thoughts regarding your child OR little/no anxious thinking

Are you a mother with OCD?

Do you have experience of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) which started during pregnancy or shortly after your child was born? If so, we would like to hear about your experiences.

We are conducting some research to explore the experiences of mothers who have experience of maternal OCD. The research is interested in mothers’ personal experiences of living with OCD and their experience of motherhood and parenting in the context of OCD. It does not matter whether you still experience OCD symptoms or you have recovered, whether you have been formally diagnosed with OCD or not, or whether you are currently undergoing treatment, hearing your experiences would be valuable in this research.

Research indicates that pregnancy and motherhood can be a time when mothers experience anxiety and that obsessive-compulsive disorder can develop or worsen around this time. Although research has been conducted into how common OCD is in new mothers and into treatment, little research has explored mothers’ personal experiences. We hope this research will provide insight into the experience of maternal OCD, improve awareness in healthcare professionals and increase support for new mothers with similar experiences.

If you contact me, I will discuss the research with you in more detail and ask you a few questions to see if you meet our criteria for participation. I can send you an information sheet and then you can take some time to decide if you would like to take part. If you would like to take part, we will arrange a meeting at a time and place convenient for you. In the meeting, I will ask you to complete a consent form, some questions about yourself, such as your age, and an interview about your experiences. If you contact me, you are not obliged to participate in the research. Furthermore, if we arrange a meeting or you do the interview but later change your mind about taking part, you can withdraw your information from the research.
